Local teacher wins Hollis and Miller Architects grant

After receiving a $250 grant, Brittany Horine, Dear Elementary first grade Title 1 reading teacher plans on investing in decodable books for students, she said. Of the 1,200 applicants for the Hollis and Miller Architects grants, Horine was one of the eight awarded. The architect company is working closely with the elementary school as they are designers for the upcoming early childhood center breaking ground this fall. Horine admitted she thought at first that the email was a scam. After looking a little more closely, she was thrilled to know she was one of the eight educators that won. “I wasn’t sure and did not expect to win. I am hoping to use the grant money for decodable books for the building, so all the teachers can use them in lessons or kids can read independently,” said Horine. “They are empowering us to become better teachers as they are working with the district.” Hollis and Miller Architects representatives Cam Hinton and John Brown agreed it was rewarding to present…
