The loss of state grant funding is expected to reduce childcare availability in Ray County, further straining what local leaders describe as an already critical shortage of providers.

Members of the Ray County Coalition discussed multiple funding losses during their July meeting, including Missouri Valley Community Action Agency (MVCAA) and prevention funding affected by state budget decisions. Representatives shared updates on ways the organizations plan to continue services despite the reductions.

Lesa Whitehead of MVCAA explained the organization recently lost state funding after more than 20 years of receiving the competitive grant. She said the organization will retain its federally funded grants, but the loss of state funding will result in the closure of three childcare centers across its seven-county service area and will also affect agency staff.

Additionally, the funding loss will reduce the number of available childcare spots, including six in Richmond and eight in Carrollton. …
