During this week’s negative digit drops in temperature and snowy streets, Richmond City Fire Chief Mark Sowder shared snow and ice safety tips. Snow and ice removal are important to reduce chances of a slip and fall. Removing can be dangerous as well. “It is important that a person who is not in good physical condition should not be shoveling snow. Pushing snow rather than lifting it with a shovel is the better method,” said the fire chief. “You will be using muscles not normally used, stretching before shoveling snow is advised. Staying hydrated and taking breaks is also important.” Dress for the cold Sowder explained dressing for the weather is vital. “The loss of body heat happens quickly in frigid temperatures. Dressing in layers of loose-fitting clothing provides the best protection against frostbite and hypothermia. All exposed skin should be covered.
