Vick honored as ’Cats claw Cougars

After two weeks of varsity 8-man football, the sporting press is placing Orrick among the state’s elite football programs. The Week 3 media poll, posted Monday online, ranked the Bearcats 10th. They helped secure their spot with their 82-30 thumping of College Heights Christian Sept. 2 – the same night they honored a longtime supporter of Orrick athletics. “We’ll take the ranking, but we’re not … (satisfied) with that at all,” coach Kirk Thacker said Monday by phone. “We think we’re … (a pretty good team) and we just want to prove it.” At halftime of the home meeting, the Bearcats paid tribute to Ritchie Vick, Thacker confirmed Tuesday via text message. Vick, who died in February at age 72, was born in Excelsior Springs but eventually settled in Orrick and regularly volunteered to support school athletics, his obituary states.
