Vandiver wins 800; ‘another first’ for coach

HIGGINSVILLE – A flesh wound could not stop Richmond senior Evan Vandiver from winning the boys 800-meter run Tuesday at the Missouri River Valley Conference East track and field championships at Lafayette County of Higginsville. Earlier that day, Vandiver had been spiked in his right calf. Richmond varsity coach Andy Frerking said the accident happened during warmups before another event, as Vandiver and a fellow Spartan were “swinging legs,” with Vandiver getting poked “in the back of the leg.” “I’ve never had a kid get hurt warming up by a teammate in the bullpen, but that’s another first,” Frerking, a head track coach for almost 20 years, said. Wearing a bandage, Vandiver raced to victory in 2 minutes, 7.51 seconds. “He ran a good, strong 800,” Frerking said. “So he’s really coming (along).
