Students, faculty mount up for donkey basketball

RICHMOND – Senior Lexi Bokarae has played her share of regular basketball. But until March 21, she had never played donkey basketball. That night in the Richmond High School gym, Bokarae joined a group of teachers and students in playing donkey basketball to help raise “just over $2,500” for the Richmond FFA Chapter, ag teacher and chapter cosponsor Laura Allen estimated. As the name suggests, the game consists of two teams playing basketball while riding donkeys – or as was the case last week, sometimes getting bucked while trying to mount them and/or struggling to lead them on foot while pulling the reins. Like regular basketball, the team with more points wins. “It was definitely different (than regular basketball),” Bokarae said. “I had to control the donkey (with) every move I did.” Trying to control the donkey was difficult, Bokarae said. “He did not like to go a way he didn’t want to go,” she said.
