Spartans use wildcat, reserve QBs, tenacious D to rout Marshall

The fans who saw Richmond thump Marshall 48-21 Sept. 9 in varsity 11-man football at Spartan Stadium might’ve wondered if they were seeing the Spartans running a new offense. Not really, according to Richmond coach Nick Persell. Repeatedly, the Spartans ran plays out of the wildcat formation, with the ball being snapped to senior running back Aidan Ivison. Unofficially, Ivison finished with 242 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries. “Our offensive line played really well,” he said. “They were just really physical and they moved the D-line really well, so there was a lot of running room there.” When the Spartans ran plays with a quarterback under center or in the pistol formation, it wasn’t their starter, senior Donivin Williams, taking the snaps.
