Spartans suffer state quarterfinal loss

BLUE SPRINGS – For the second straight season, a Kansas City-based private school ended Richmond’s postseason run in boys basketball in the Class 4 state quarterfinals. The Spartans’ latest run ended with a 52-32 loss to Pembroke Hill March 12 at Blue Springs High School – 365 days after their 70-67 state quarterfinal loss to The Barstow School at Avila University. Like the Barstow loss, Richmond junior guard Eli Steele expects last week’s loss to sting for a while. But the hurt is “even worse” than the Barstow loss, Steele said. Unlike the Barstow loss, Richmond never led against Pembroke Hill. The Raiders tagged the Spartans with a 14-0 opening run and led 19-3 after one quarter. Jack Gogue sank a two-point bucket with 1 minute, 50 seconds left and Thomas Murphy sank one of two free throws with 43.7 seconds left to provide Richmond’s three points.
