Spartans overcome jitters and sweep Bearcats
The Spartans had to get through some pre-match jitters to get their first varsity volleyball win this season, senior outside hitter/defensive specialist Sarah Brungardt, junior setter Allison Coats and Richmond coach Crystal Turner agreed.
Knowing they were playing for family members, friends and community members, the Spartans were sick to their stomachs and edgy before their Sept. 8 non-conference meeting with visiting Orrick, Brungardt said.
“We didn’t want to disappoint them and disappoint ourselves,” she said.
Rather than disappoint their fans, the Spartans won the home opener 3-0.
The Spartans overcame early deficits in each set to sweep the best-of-five match.
“It took them a little bit to calm down, and I think … those nerves crept in a little bit when the … (games) were getting close – and that’s (a matter of) playing more and more matches,” Turner said. “We’ll get rid of that.”
