Softballers start at stroke of midnight again
Aireanna Hoeppner and Aleana McFee did some special preparation for Richmond’s Midnight Madness-style practice Monday at Southview Park to start the varsity softball season: They each took a Sunday nap.
“I slept for probably about six hours before coming to this,” said McFee, a sophomore, with a slight laugh, adding she awakened about a half-hour before needing to head for practice.
Hoeppner, a senior, was pleased to participate in the midnight practice, a tradition Spartans coach Staci Maddux has kept going since the ballfield got lights more than a decade ago.
“This is my last time, so I’m here to work hard and have fun with my team,” Hoeppner said.
The practice included some stretching and agility exercises. It also included setting ground rules for behavior, with the players listing six inexcusable displays of behavior.
