Richmond’s softball winning streak over Lexington ends

Giving up multi-run innings has hurt Richmond to start the varsity softball season, according to Spartans coach Trent Thompson and pitcher/infielder Elizabeth Wood. Thompson and Wood agreed that was the case Monday, when the Spartans fell to Lexington at Southview Park in Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division action. The inning was the fourth inning. Officially, the Minutewomen tagged the Spartans for 13 runs that inning as part of a 16-1 rout. “Minimizing those big innings is a big thing,” Thompson said. Some errors hurt the Spartans, Thompson said. After a few miscues, “it kind of snowballed, I felt like,” he said. A few team injuries hurt the Spartans, too – and not just during Lexington’s big inning, according to Wood. The injuries hurt because of their effects on team morale, she said. An injury “gets everyone down,” said Wood, who went three-plus innings as Richmond’s starting pitcher. “If one person’s down, everyone’s down,” she said. For the Minutewomen,…
