Giving up multi-run innings has hurt Richmond to start the varsity softball season, according to Spartans coach Trent Thompson and pitcher/infielder Elizabeth Wood. Thompson and Wood agreed that was the case Monday, when the Spartans fell to Lexington at Southview Park in Missouri River Valley Conference (MRVC)-East Division action. The inning was the fourth inning. Officially, the Minutewomen tagged the Spartans for 13 runs that inning as part of a 16-1 rout. “Minimizing those big innings is a big thing,” Thompson said. Some errors hurt the Spartans, Thompson said. After a few miscues, “it kind of snowballed, I felt like,” he said. A few team injuries hurt the Spartans, too – and not just during Lexington’s big inning, according to Wood. The injuries hurt because of their effects on team morale, she said.
