Richmond hoopsters fall short of Lawson Invitational threepeat
LAWSON – Gallatin denied Richmond a third straight Lawson Invitational title in boys basketball.
On Jan. 16, Richmond faced Gallatin in the Lawson High School gym for the tournament title – the third straight season the teams faced off in the championship game. The Spartans, who defeated the Bulldogs 51-33 in 2019 and 60-50 in 2020, were in position for a threepeat at halftime, leading 30-24.
But then, with Richmond leading 32-24, the Bulldogs took control by staging an 11-0 third-quarter run. The Spartans vainly tried to catch up, falling 65-56.
“I know we scored a lot of points in the first half, but I didn’t think we played very well – and I thought that’s kind of where the game got away from us because we let them stick around,” Richmond coach Kevin Jermain said.
Junior Keyshaun Elliott, who paced Richmond with 19 points and was one of two Spartans to receive all-tournament honors, agreed. They could have played better the first half by doing one thing, Elliott said.
