Richmond girls rebound from loss, claim third at RWC

Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump watched her Spartans learn from a loss in last week’s Richmond Winter Classic – and turn those lessons learned into a victory later in that tournament. On Jan. 26, the Spartans fell to undefeated Bishop LeBlond of St. Joseph 7031 in pool play at Richmond High School. They then handled Lone Jack 40-27 Jan. 27, also at the high school, to claim third place and finish the tournament 2-1. “I thought we had a fantastic first half (against LeBlond), even though the second half didn’t go the way we wanted,” Vantrump said. “But we took the positives out of it. We knew were coming in today playing a good team, and I think that we came in focused and eager to get a win and ready to go. And that’s exactly what they did.” Spurred by that eagerness, Richmond led much of the way. With the score 6-6, the Spartans took control with a 10-3 run. Richmond led 16-11 after one quarter.
