Richmond girls drop thriller to open own tourney

RICHMOND – For their first varsity basketball game after an unexpected week off, a 45-41 loss Monday to Pembroke Hill, the Spartans served up a nail-biting finish. After three-plus seesaw quarters, Richmond trailed Pembroke Hill 44- 41 with less than a minute to play and Pembroke Hill in possession. The Spartans pursued two options, hoping to pull off a comeback victory or at least force overtime in the first-round Richmond Winter Classic meeting at Richmond High School. One option: to force a turnover and score. The other: foul a Pembroke Hill ballhandler to stop the clock and send that Raider to the foul line, then hope to rebound a missed free throw and score. They fouled a ballhandler, junior guard Jordyn Smith, who attempted two foul shots with 14.6 seconds left and missed both. After the second attempt, the Spartans pursued the rebound.
