Richmond boys open Lawson tourney with runaway win
LAWSON – The Spartans took a few minutes to get going during their 77-21 rout of winless Trenton on Monday night to open the boys portion of the Lawson Invitational Basketball Tournament, senior Layne Cavanah and junior post player Jack Gogue agreed.
“We weren’t playing as well as we could’ve in the first quarter,” Cavanah said.
The Spartans opened the meeting in the Lawson High School gym with a 9-3 run. They led 11-7 after one quarter.
Richmond bolted away with a 27-1 second-quarter run. The Spartans led 39- 10 at halftime.
“I wouldn’t say we ever played … efficiently the whole game,” Richmond varsity boys coach Kevin Jermain said. “But we went from very little effort to decent effort. And that was a big adjustment. We still could’ve played a lot better and still need to be a lot better, but … they turned up the energy … just enough to kind of turn things around.”
During the second quarter, “we finally figured out what we needed to do,” Cavanah said.
