RHS varsity wins thriller on ‘backyard football moment’

Jacob Lieberknecht and Brice Dome had what Lieberknecht called “a backyardfootballmoment” to cap Richmond’s 26-20 Week 2 road victory over St. Joseph Lafayette. Richmond and St. Joe Lafayette were knotted 20-20 with fractions of a second left in the fourth quarter of the Sept. 5 livestreamed varsity 11-man football clash. Richmond had possession at the Irish 18-yard line. With time to run one more play and win it in regulation, Lieberknecht threw for Dome in the end zone. Dome caught Lieberknecht’s pass for the decisive touchdown. “It was a really good ball,” Dome said Monday afternoon on the Spartans’ practice field. According to Lieberknecht, a junior quarterback, the catch was a result of his familiarity with Dome and vice versa. They have “been playing football together for a long time,” he said.
