RHS girls fall in Winter Classic opener

Richmond varsity girls basketball coach Kaylee Vantrump could tell her Spartans were getting rid of some rust Monday night, when they hosted topseeded Bishop LeBlond of St. Joseph at the high school to open the Richmond Winter Classic. Playing in only their second game after a weather-induced, two-week layoff, the Spartans “were just struggling” in the 5527 defeat, Vantrump said. “We’ve only had two (formal) practices in the past two weeks and that’s really tough to do, going into this competitive of a tournament,” she said. The rust was particularly evident to Vantrump in Richmond’s struggles to catch the basketball and make defensive shifts. “That was one of our biggest things was not getting to the corner and closing out on the shooter,” she said. Sophomore Emma Hash noticed some rust, too.
