New Richmond softball skipper feels at home

For Trent Thompson, Richmond is like home. Thompson, a former high school and college baseball player, is Richmond’s new varsity softball coach. He succeeds Staci Maddux, now the Richmond Middle School assistant principal. He joins the Spartans after a stint at East High School in Kansas City. “I’m glad to get out of that area,” he said. “I had tried to recruit two years in a row (for) softball. Got new equipment, couldn’t get enough girls out.” By contrast, Richmond reminds Thompson of Nevada, a town of about 8,000 in southwestern Missouri, where he graduated from high school – and where he briefly played for the Nevada Griffons, a summer baseball team for college-age players. “Kind of similar country,” Thompson said. Attitudes toward softball in Richmond also remind Thompson of Nevada. “You can tell the girls want to be here,” Thompson said.
