New H-C coach tackles JV-to-varsity transition challenge

HARDIN – Morgan Bishop is new to being a head Hardin-Central varsity basketball coach, but not to coaching Hardin-Central basketball. Bishop moved up to varsity from the junior high program. The move is “definitely a big challenge,” she said Nov. 3 at the district schoolhouse. At the junior level, coaching is “mainly about fundamentals,” Bishop said. At the varsity level, the fundamentals should be mastered and the focus should be to “build on plays, build on better offense, better defense, better team aspects alone,” she said. Bishop succeeds Kenny Layman, a 2015 Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee, who retired. “I know how I’m going to coach. … I know what I want as an ultimate goal as a coach,” she said. “As long as I can bring that to the school and this team, then I think I have succeeded.” Bishop’s ultimate goals are to make her players better athletes and people. “I want to win ballgames,” she said. “But overall, if we can get better and we can…
