McGill leads Spartans on ball diamond

A new era is underway with Richmond in varsity baseball. The Spartans kicked off their season last weekend in tournament play at Odessa, going 1-2. They fell to Warsaw 6-5 March 22. On March 23, Richmond defeated Lexington 7-6 and lost to the host school 14-7. The Spartans did so under coach Zach McGill, a Richmond alumnus and former assistant coach, who succeeds Nick Persell. “This weekend was very encouraging for our team,” McGill stated Monday via email. “Over our three games, we held the lead in every game. Had some adversity that we had to work through.” Specifically, McGill praised the performances of Leyton Lee, Hunter Mitchell and Trent Logsdon. In pitching “six good innings” to help the Spartans edge Lexington, Lee “was efficient in the strike zone and really commanded his stuff well,” he wrote. Logsdon and Mitchell “shined at the plate all weekend,” McGill stated. THE SEASON AHEAD McGill, who served as Persell’s assistant, inherits a program with “some core returners,”…
