McGill emphasizes basics in first season leading Orrick girls
ORRICK – Zach McGill is taking a fundamentals-oriented approach in his firs season as Orrick’s varsity girls basketball coach.
“All aspects of the game, we need to work on – and that’s just part of being young and having minimal numbers right now with COVID going on,” McGill said Nov. 25 by phone.
As of last week, the Bearcats had 10 players on their roster, but they have “been rolling with anywhere from six to eight,” McGill estimated. He attributed that to quarantining a few players.
“Things are tough at practice,” he said. “You can’t really go up against a scout team.”
Seven of those 10 players are underclassmen – two freshmen and five sophomores. Three juniors round out the group. Only one of the Bearcats returns with significant playing time from last season, when McGill was the assistant to
Bryan O’Dell.
