Longtime coach, educator leads Richmond track
RICHMOND – The Spartans’ new head track and field coach is not new to the Richmond School District.
Or to Richmond track and field.
Or to being a head coach.
Andy Frerking, in his sixth year in the district, succeeds Mike Long. Frerking’s stint has included teaching eighth-grade history and serving as an assistant to Long, who retired after the 2021 season.
“Coach Long did a lot of good things with them and I really liked … (what he did), and we’re hoping to build on that and expand on it,” Frerking said March 3. “Having worked with Coach Long and the kids for five or six years will help keep continuity in the program … and keep things moving in a good direction.”
Before Richmond, Frerking served as a head track coach for 18 years – nine at Lafayette County of Higginsville, nine at Santa Fe, he said.
