LEXINGTON – A long wait ended for Richmond varsity track and field coach Mike Long and his Spartans on Tuesday.

They had been set to open the season March 25 by hosting a meet, but weather interfered. Instead, the Spartans opened Tuesday in the Lexington Invitational, where they swept both meets. The boys team finished with 203 points – 45.5 points ahead of runner-up Lexington. The girls team finished with 115 points – 10 points ahead of runner-up Santa Fe.

“We’ve sat there and … (had) practice after practice after practice; and (then) you (have) got rain and then you still run out in the rain. … Practicing and practicing and practicing is good. … It’s good, but when you get to the meet, … you want it to be a different level,” Long said.

The Spartans boys won six individual events. Senior Matthew Lopez paced Richmond by winning the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 44.88 seconds and the pole vault by clearing 3.15 meters.
