Johnson chooses to take ‘passion’ for jumping to Pitt State
By signing state champion jumper and Richmond graduate Jacob Johnson, Pittsburg (Kan.) State University is getting more than another athlete for its men’s track and field program, according to Richmond jumpers coach Jacob Swope.
“What Pitt State’s going to be getting is a guy that’ll immediately bring a passion and a love for the sport to the jumps room,” Swope said during Johnson’s May 1 signing in the Richmond High School gym.
And in Johnson, the NCAA Division II school is getting an athlete who’ll conduct himself like a coach, said Swope, who compared Johnson to a point guard in basketball. As Swope pointed out, the point guard serves as “the coach on the court.”
“He’s going to help out the other guys in the jumps room,” Swope said.
Moreover, with Johnson, Pitt State is getting someone who can fill the shoes being left by national champion jumper Tre Betts, Swope said. Betts, a senior, has won back-toback Division II national men’s outdoor triple jump titles. He secured his…
