Harris leads ’Cats at districts; advances in three events
CLEVELAND – Orrick varsity track and field coach Kirk Thacker had a hunch about sophomore Jonathon Harris when the season began.
“I told him …, ‘I think you could make a pretty good jumper and pretty good hurdler,’” Thacker said.
Last weekend, Harris was good enough at both to get one step closer to being a state-qualifying jumper and hurdler.
Competing May 7 in the Class 1 District 6 boys meet on the Midway School District campus, Harris won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.16 seconds and placed second in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.07. He also leapt 11.95 meters to take third in the triple jump.
“Winning the … (110) hurdles here by a large margin was fantastic,” Thacker said.
By placing among the top four, Harris qualified in the three events for Saturday’s Class 1 Sectional 3 competition at West Platte High School in Weston. Top-four finishes there will send him to state competition, slated for next weekend at Jefferson City High School.
