Burton gleans knowledge from H-C girls’ loss to W-N

Hardin-Central varsity girls basketball coach Tommy Burton considered the Bulldogs’ 33-19 Feb. 1 courtwarming loss to Wellington-Napoleon a teaching moment – for himself.

Specifically, Burton considered the first quarter and change to be a teaching moment.

Wellington-Napoleon took control of the non-conference meeting with a 15-0 opening run. Mikayla Simsheuser capped the run with a two-point bucket with 7 minutes, 34 seconds left in the second quarter.

“I started us out in the wrong defense,” Burton said. “I’m a young coach and I’m going to make a lot of mistakes throughout the year. I saw their film … (of them playing) Archie and Archie ran … (a) 1-22, just like we did. It didn’t work out for us.”

Because it wasn’t working, the Bulldogs went to a 2-3 zone defense instead, according to Burton.

“It looked a lot better,” he said. “I think if I start us out in the correct defense, it (is) a completely different game.”

For Wellington-Napoleon, the 15-0 start was in contrast to how the ballclub …
