Buchanan wins javelin going away at Mineral Water Classic

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Blake Buchanan wasted no time in winning the boys javelin April 23 in the Mineral Water Classic at Tiger Stadium. The Orrick junior won it by throwing 48.9 meters, or 160 feet, 5.25 inches. It was his initial attempt, Orrick varsity track and field coach Paul Giffin said. “It was over pretty quickly,” Giffin said. Giffin also said Buchanan “pretty much clobbered the field.” Indeed, the top throw of the runner-up, Excelsior Springs senior Jacob Baxter, was 39.78 meters – roughly 30 feet shorter than Buchanan’s best throw. Buchanan made his throw as the threat of crummy weather loomed. “The wind was pretty decent,” Giffin said. “The turf runway was good. So … the circumstances were nice. And the weather wasn’t bad when he was throwing.
