Free fishing event aims to remove barriers for local families

What began as an effort to create monthly community-driven activities has grown into an upcoming outdoor event organizers hope will encourage families to unplug, spend time together and make lasting memories at Southview Park. Special Needs Services (SNS) and Support Services of Ray County will host a Community at Play and Community Connections fishing event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 6, at Southview Park and Lake in Richmond. The free event is being held in conjunction with Missouri’s Free Fishing Weekend, which allows residents to fish in public waters without a fishing permit while still following statewide size and limit regulations. The event is being organized in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Ray County Library and DMF Bait Company. Organizers say the afternoon is designed to welcome all ages and skill levels while helping remove barriers that can sometimes prevent families and individuals from participating in outdoor recreation opportunities. …
