Different storm, same reactions

It doesn’t take long after a school cancellation for the comments to start rolling in. This time, it was a forecast calling for a potentially severe storm system, with enough concern about high winds and threat of tornadoes that schools across the area opted for early dismissal. Buses ran midday, schedules shiftedand parents scrambled to adjust their plans on short notice. Almost immediately, social media filled up with a familiar response, with people saying things like, “Back in our day, we never would have gotten out early for something like this,” or sharing stories of sitting in classrooms while sirens sounded, books held over their heads, crouching under desks or lining hallway walls with hands over their necks, staying put no matter what was happening outside. There is a part of me that understands exactly where those comments come from. For a lot of people, those memories are tied to resilience and routine, to a time when things felt simpler or at least more predictable. It…
