Volunteer firefighter steps in beyond the call
When an elderly woman involved in a three-vehicle crash had to leave for the hospital, one more problem remained at the scene: her dog.
For Hardin Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Manchester, the solution was simple.
Once the patient was transported, Manchester placed the dog in his vehicle and took it to Renfro Veterinary Clinic, where it could be cared for until its owner returned.
Manchester explained calls often involve more than just treating injuries at the scene.
“Actually, we’ve run into that before in the past where we’ve had animals injured,” said Manchester. “We didn’t have anybody else and the deputies were busy with other calls that were actually happening at the time. I was right there, so I asked her where she wanted me to take the dog, and she said to Renfro’s office. After we got her loaded in the ambulance and she was clear, I went ahead and loaded the dog up. He even rode in the front seat.”
