Council addresses tied races, approves street project

A pair of tied races in the April 7 election could send Richmond voters back to the polls later this year as officials begin the process of determining outcomes. Richmond City Council members declared the election results during a recent meeting and approved an ordinance outlining the next steps required under state law after multiple races ended in ties. City Attorney Chris Williams explained tie votes occurred in both Ward One and Ward Four, creating two separate situations the city must resolve under state statute. “In Ward One, you had seven people get one vote and in Ward Four, two people get nine votes,” said Williams. The ballot helps explain why the situation developed. In Richmond, the Ward One one-year term and Ward Four two-year term both appeared as write-in races, with no printed candidate names listed for either seat.
