Resident questions county response to Sunshine Law requests

Concerns about public access to county records surfaced during a recent Ray County Commission meeting as a resident alleged Sunshine Law requests had been ignored or improperly denied. During the public comment portion of the meeting, Ray County resident Kurt Croix told commissioners he had submitted multiple requests for records, including the county budget, but believed his requests had not been properly addressed. “I keep making Sunshine requests to the clerk and they keep getting ignored or denied,” said Croix. “I have been reporting these to the state, because this is my right as a citizen of the county to have records such as the budget sitting on your desk in there.” Croix noted the issue was not limited to a single request and argued residents were not being given the information they needed to stay informed about county business. “There are other records I’ve requested, but it feels like in the county there is an us-versus-them mentality when it comes to information,”…
