Criminal dismissal totals prompt records review
After Ray County commissioners questioned the number of criminal cases dismissed in 2025 and raised concerns about evidence transmission between law enforcement and the prosecutor’s office, the Richmond News sought records from county offices to gain more insight into case classifications and evidence submission procedures.
During the meeting, Ray County Prosecuting Attorney Camille Johnston addressed commissioners’ questions after they referenced a list of cases they believed had been dismissed and indicated the total exceeded 100 felony cases. Johnston noted she pulled a report from her office’s internal case management system to verify the number and review how the cases were categorized.
According to Johnston, the report reflected 123 cases coded as dismissed during 2025, including 66 felonies, 50 misdemeanors and seven infractions. She said the total included multiple types of case outcomes and not all dismissals represent cases that end without resolution.
