Relief efforts follow Sunshine Lake fire
A fast-moving fire fueled by dry, windy conditions recently burned six structures and threatened eight others in the Sunshine Lake area, prompting a multi-agency response and keeping crews on scene for 23 hours.
The Richmond Fire Department was dispatched at 12:37 p.m. to an outside fire on Sportsman Road at Sunshine Lake on Feb. 19. While units were en route, 911 dispatch advised crews the fire was nearing several structures.
Upon arrival, firefighters found six structures already involved and approximately eight additional structures immediately threatened by the advancing flames.
Mutual aid was requested as suppression efforts began. The Ray County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol moved residents out of the area while additional crews worked to protect uninvolved structures, extinguish those already burning and press back the fire line.
