Former sheriff files lawsuit against prosecutor
A former Ray County sheriff has filed a civil lawsuit against Ray County Prosecuting Attorney Camille Johnston, alleging statements made during a 2024 county commission meeting were false and harmed his reputation.
The petition was filed in Ray County Circuit Court by Scott Childers and his wife, Kristen.
According to the filing, the lawsuit stems from statements Johnston allegedly made during a Feb. 14, 2024, Ray County Commission meeting while discussing budget matters. The petition states Johnston is sued in both her official capacity as prosecuting attorney and in her individual capacity.
The petition alleges Johnston said Childers had attempted to run her off the road and suggested a black eye he had was the result of “beating up inmates,” statements the filing describes as false and damaging.
The petition specifically references comments about a black eye Childers had at the time, alleging Johnston linked the injury to misconduct while speaking during the meeting. “…
