He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1982.

Her daughter-in-law, Irean Carter; special friend and caregiver, Mary Sanders; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, Wilma was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Carter; daughter, Janet Carter; grandson, Peyton Smith Carter; great-grandson, Robert Swain; three brothers, Ralph Tracy, Cordell Tracy and Paul Tracy; and sister, Helen Tracy.

Wilma was raised and educated in the area of her birth and was a proud 1942 graduate of Richmond High School.

In addition to dedicating her life to raising her children as a devoted housewife and homemaker, she also worked in nutritional services for the Richmond R-XVI School District. Wilma was a wonderful cook for more than 40 years at Woodson Dear School; and her cinnamon rolls, bread pudding and orange slice cookies – one of her recipes was even published – were cherished family favorites.

When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she enjoyed sewing, playing cards and dominoes. She was named “Domino Queen” because she was always winning.

She belonged to a special Hand and Foot Club for more than 40 years. Over the years, she also belonged to several card clubs and was an active member of the Extension for more than 70 years; F.E.C. Club, which gave her the Heart Award, and the Red Hats Club, both in Richmond; the Retired Senior Volunteer Program; and Ray County Hospital gift shop. She also proudly served as a 4-H leader for 40-plus years.

Wilma was of the Christian faith. She was a devoted, active grandmother, faithfully attending and doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center or Shirkey Hospice. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, at Richmond Christian Chapel, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and the services to follow at 2. Burial was to be in Richmond Memory Gardens.
