BESTING THE BIGGER BOYS Richmond varsity wrestling coach Cody Hogan and his Spartans punched above their weight at the Alan Isom Invitational. Or rather, wrestled above their Missouri State High School Activities Association class designation.
The Spartans, a Class 2 program, tallied 199 points to place second at the Jan. 23 competition, hosted by Center High School in Kansas City and shorted from two days to one because of the weather. In doing so, they finished ahead of such Class 3 programs as Raytown, Grandview, Raytown South and Smithville; and Raymore-Peculiar, a Class 4 program.
Lee’s Summit North, also a Class 4 program, took the team title with 264.5 points.
Latimer Cavanah, Brady Hyder, Ryan Sharp and Madix Hutchings won their respective divisions to lead the Richmond boys to their runner-up finish. Cavanah, a sophomore, was the 120-pound champion, capping his run by pinning Summit Christian Academy’s Garrett Gordon in 2 minutes, 45 seconds.
