Commission plans objection letter as battery project concerns rise

Ray County commissioners are planning to prepare an objection letter connected to a proposed battery storage project after residents pressed for clarity, raised safety concerns and questioned possible annexation during a recent meeting. Ray County Sheriff’s Office Major Tom Noon, who was recently appointed as the county’s emergency management director, told commissioners he had just begun reviewing information about the project this week and needed more time to understand its potential risks. He noted his review raised several issues that required additional evaluation before the county could proceed. “As you know, I’m coming in sort of late to this project from an emergency management standpoint,” said Noon. “Looking through what was presented brought up some concerns about it sitting in a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) floodplain, our low-lying fog, and if one of us had a thermal runway on that.
