Ameren completes major upgrade to local substation
The Lawson community is now receiving electricity through a fully modernized substation after Ameren Missouri replaced a transformer that had been in service since the Eisenhower administration. The recently completed project updates equipment that supported the town for more than 60 years and marks one of several major reliability upgrades Ameren has finished across the region.
As part of Ameren Missouri’s Smart Energy Plan, the work is an ongoing effort to modernize aging infrastructure and strengthen the grid for customers statewide. Since 2019, the company has upgraded nearly 150substations and worked with more than 1,200 Missouribased suppliers across more than 60 counties. The Lawson project follows recent upgrades in Wood Heights and Lathrop, which included modern fault protection and automated smart switch technology. Smart switch installations have also been added to overhead lines in Excelsior Springs to help isolate damage and speed restoration during outages.
