Former Ray County sheriff faces six federal charges

A former Ray County Sheriff once responsible for upholding justice is now accused of violating it. Federal prosecutors have charged Scott Childers with six felonies alleging civil rights abuses and falsification of a report. The recently filed indictment outlines five counts of violating constitutional rights under 18 U.S.C. §242 and one count of falsifying records under 18 U.S.C. §1519. The case was presented before a federal grand jury in Kansas City. Childers served as Ray County sheriff during the alleged incidents, which prosecutors say involved the use of unreasonable force, unlawful arrest and a false narrative report, according to the indictment. The first count centers on an alleged assault of a pretrial detainee in November 2022.
