Area prep athletes show pickleball potential
I need to do some more recruiting.
A few years and many columns ago, I shared my dream partners for doubles pickleball. On the pipe dream side of the continuum, I listed pro football quarterback Patrick Mahomes II. On the more realistic side, I listed then-Richmond multisport athlete Donivin Williams as a candidate once he graduated high school, as I told him at least once while covering his varsity 11man football games.
Since then, I’ve lost touch with Williams. And since then, I’ve gone from dreaming about recruiting doubles partners for pickleball tournaments to building a full team of singles and doubles players, a la the Kansas City Stingers, a new-ish pro pickleball team consisting of players 50 and older.
But rather than utilizing only those players who are members of the “Half-Century Club,” I would want my dream team to span a few generations. On the 50-plus side, I would recruit folks with whom I play pickleball in the city gym in Richmond. To bring in some younger blood,…
