Spartans blank Trojans

Richmond has its first shutout this season in varsity 11-man football. Building a 24-0 lead after one quarter, the Spartans went on to lead 43-0 at halftime and cruised to a 49-0 Oct. 3 road win over Carrollton. “Overall, we just had a great game,” running back Cyrus Jackson said Monday. A shutout makes a football coach feel good about his team’s game plan, Spartans coach Nick Persell said. It also gives a coach a good feeling about the team’s execution of that game plan, he said. “The fact that our kids executed at such a high level was fun to watch,” Persell said. Defensively, the Spartans executed the game plan well enough to hold the Trojans to 53 yards of total offense. Sophomore Bryson Pruitt, an inside linebacker on defense and a running back on offense, credited defensive coordinator David Rash with getting Richmond’s defense prepared to stop Carrollton. “He coached us up on every assignment we needed to do – how to fit everything right, how to tackle,” Pruitt said. …
