Best breaks 80, takes third at tourney

On Sept. 17, Lyla Best had what Richmond girls golf coach Courtney Sisson would probably consider a breakthrough. Competing in the Richmond Invitational, Best shot a 78 (+6) – her first time to finish below 80 for an 18-hole round. With her score, she placed third individually in the varsity tournament. She was one stroke behind individual co-champions Abby Owens of South Harrison and Charlotte Fischer of Sedalia Smith-Cotton. “I told her at the beginning of the season, I said, ‘We’re breaking 80 this year,’” Sisson said. “And it’s awesome that she did it for the first time at home.” Best sensed she would achieve that goal after tallying her score for the first nine holes, she said. “After I saw that 39 on the front nine, I was like, ‘O.K., I could go low today,’” said Best, who also broke 40 for nine holes for the first time.
