Locals challenge LERF board appointment

A contested appointment to the Law Enforcement Restitution Fund (LERF) board sparked a tense and lengthy debate during a recent Ray County Commission meeting. Although residents urged commissioners to reconsider its decision, they ultimately moved forward with the appointment. A motion to appoint Natalie Macy and Jimmy Carter to the LERF board was made by presiding commissioner Sheila Tracy and approved by unanimous vote later in the meeting. The decision, however, followed more than 30 minutes of public comment and commissioner discussion, which focused almost entirely on Macy’s nomination. Residents questioned her qualifications and alleged conflicts of interest based on her professional affiliations. “I feel that Natalie being on the LERF board is a conflict of interest, and I think that should not be considered for good people,” stated resident Julie Nelson. “I was on the board and I feel illegally taken off.
