Overgrown cemeteries raise concern

Years of neglect have taken their toll on two of Ray County’s oldest cemeteries, and now the woman fighting to preserve them says she’s running out of time, resources and help. Megan Pendleton, who has been managing maintenance and volunteer efforts at Shotwell and Richmond cemeteries since early 2023, spoke before Ray County commissioners at a recent meeting to outline the mounting challenges she faces and request support in keeping the historic cemeteries from further deteriorating. “I’m not sure there’s enough workdays in the year to get all this done,” said Pendleton. “We are swimming upstream in a sinking boat really bad.” Pendleton spoke at length with county commissioners Wednesday, urging them to consider solutions for the long-term upkeep of both properties, which are no longer open for new burials but remain full of gravesites with historic and local significance. “I’m overwhelmed thinking how big it is,” stated Pendelton.
