O’Dell continues teaching ’Cats new offense, defense
Lucas Walker and his Orrick varsity eight-man football teammates continued learning new offensive and defensive systems this week.
They did so during a three-day team camp. Overseen by new coach Matt O’Dell, the camp began Monday and concluded Wednesday on Orrick’s practice field.
O’Dell, an Orrick graduate and a former assistant at Richmond to 11-man varsity coach Nick Persell, describes his offenses and defenses as “multiple.”
“We’re going to be able to do a variety of different things – a lot like what Persell does at Richmond,” he said Monday.
The Bearcats also will offer opponents multiple looks, according to O’Dell. That’s especially true on offense, he suggested.
“Being able to run the same play out of multiple, different formations is going to get you different looks defensively as well,” O’Dell said.
Walker, an upperclassman, called O’Dell’s new offenses and defenses “way, way different than what we’ve done.”
“We’re completely switching up things now,” he said.
