Fire department urges safety, outlines fireworks rules
As Independence Day approaches, bursts of red, white and blue aren’t the only things set to ignite. Fireworks can bring thrills and celebration, but when misused, they can also spark injuries, fires and legal trouble.
In Richmond, city ordinances strictly regulate when and how fireworks can be used. Fire Chief Mark Sowder is urging residents to follow the rules, understand the risks and choose safety over spectacle.
“Fireworks are restricted by city ordinance in Richmond in the following ways,” said Sowder. “No person shall shoot off or discharge any rockets, fireworks, torpedoes or combustible materials within the city limits at any time except between the dates of July 1 and July 5 of each year.”
That five-day window is the only time residents are permitted to discharge fireworks within city limits. Outside of those specific days, any use is prohibited, no matter how small or seemingly harmless.
The ordinance also limits when fireworks may be sold.
