Council accepts grant, moves forward on projects
A federal grant will help Richmond police officers train for real-world threats using their own duty weapons in simulated scenarios. The grant will also equip supervisors with mobile ballistic shields for highrisk response.
The Richmond City Council recently voted to accept an $8,103.20 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant — at no cost to the city — to fund the purchase of specialized training gear and protective equipment.
Police Chief Scott Bagley told council members the new tools would boost both preparedness and officer safety.
“It’s a grant that we were awarded from the federal government for equipment purchase,” said Bagley. “There’s training equipment and a simulator we can set up. It’s geared toward threat assessment.”
The training system allows officers to temporarily disable their duty firearms by removing the recoil spring and installing a replacement part, letting them run live-action scenarios without live fire. Bagley noted the simulator will be used for workshops and…
