Mental exam ordered in assault, elderly abuse case
ALawson man’s criminal case has been temporarily suspended while a courtordered mental examination determines whether he is fit to stand trial.
Richard D. Almond, 25, is facing one felony count of third-degree domestic assault and one misdemeanor of abuse of an elderly, disabled or vulnerable person.
Eighth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Lori J. Baskins issued the order earlier this week after finding reasonable cause to believe Almond may lack the mental fitness to proceed.
According to the order, Almond will be examined by one or more individuals designated by the Missouri Department of Mental Health. The examiner will determine whether Almond suffers from a mental disease or defect and if he has the capacity to understand the proceedings against him or assist in his own defense. The order also directs the examiner to issue detailed findings within 60 days and to evaluate whether Almond should remain in custody at a mental health facility during the evaluation process and, if found…
