Richmond man stays behind bars in alleged child shield case

A Richmond man, accused of using a child as a human shield during a confrontation with police, will remain in custody after his request for a bond modification was denied. Alexander Duchan Miles, 29, is facing five felony charges, including first-degree kidnapping; first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, creating substantial risk with no sexual conduct; armed criminal action; resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony and unlawful use of a weapon. Earlier this week, Miles asked the court to modify the nobond order through his attorney, Erwin Barbre. After reviewing several statutory factors, Eighth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Lori J. Baskins denied the request. Factors considered included the nature and circumstances of the charges, the weight of the evidence, Miles’ family ties, employment, financial resources, character, mental condition and length of residence in the community.
